44th Geneva International Exhibition of Invention

At the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions held from 13 to 17 April, the Centre has won a Gold Medal and a Bronze Medal in the categories of “Computer Science, Software, Electronics, Electricity, Methods of Communication” and “Security, Rescue, Alarm” respectively. The Smart Blind Cane which provides voice instructions to the visually impaired was so highly praised that it was awarded with the “Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury”.

Traditional Guide Brick can only provide guidance for the visually impaired by the tactile paving tiles but cannot indicate which direction to take at a diversion point. The Centre has deployed RFID technologies in the development of “Smart Blind Cane” with the application of smartphone. A RFID reader is embedded inside the “Smart Blind Cane”. By reading the signals sending out from RFID tags installed inside the tactile paving, it can provide voice instructions to the user through smartphone.

International teams from more than 40 countries have participated in the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions competing for different awards. The Bronze Medal which the Centre has won at the same occasion is the IoT System for Construction Site Safety, again by deploying the RFID reader to enhance the construction safety. Whenever a worker forgets to put on a safety belt properly or step into a potentially dangerous area, both the worker and the contractor will be alerted by the “beep” sound.

Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality Technology Forum

In recent years, VR and AR have brought about breakthroughs in many facets of businesses including staff training in logistics and supply chain, museum exhibition, construction virtual prototyping, drone and mapping, just to name a few. VR/AR is one of the most popular topics and can be widely applied in different industries. In view of that, the LSCM R&D Centre has hosted a Technology Forum on “Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality” (VR/AR) on 13 June at Cyberport, to discuss its latest development and to explore its possible applications. Insightful presentations from prominent speakers were invited to share views and experiences on VR/AR technology. And the event has attracted more than 150 guests to attend.

The Forum was attended by Dr Dorothy Chan, BBS, Chairlady of The Finance and Administration Committee, LSCM R&D Centre, Mr Herman Lam, Chief Executive Officer, Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, Prof Henry Lau, Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, University of Hong Kong, Dr Alan Lam, Founding Chairman, Technology Incubation Network, Dr Tim Huang, Department of Building and Real Estate, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Mr Jack Zhang, Founding Chairman, Hong Kong Flying Club Association, followed by a panel discussion on “Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality Application Development in
Hong Kong” moderated by Mr Simon Wong, Chief Executive Officer, LSCM R&D Centre.

Apart from local experts in VR and AR shared their views and experiences on VR/AR technology, and there was a panel discussion on “Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality Application Development in Hong Kong” and a business matching session, to facilitate the knowledge exchange between the academia and the industry.
