Smart AP: Wi-Fi Positioning and Optimization for a Smart City

Print

Overview

Developing Hong Kong as a vibrant smart city with high-quality Wi-Fi experience has been identified as an important strategic direction (The Digital 21 Strategy 2014). Besides installation of Wi-Fi access points (APs) to large scale, a smart city calls for overcoming current Wi-Fi challenges with implementable and intelligent algorithms. Currently Wi-Fi service suffers from its lack of device tracking capability, high interference, AP load unbalancing and the absence of an easy-to-use cloud-based management tool. In this proposal, we plan to research and implement Smart Wi-Fi, an intelligent embedded software suite for AP to overcome the above limitations. Smart Wi-Fi has the following features: 1) Devices (users or assets) can be tracked using either AP-based tracking or joint AP-client localization by means of fingerprinting; 2) The network enjoys low interference and good coverage through intelligent channel and power assignments; 3) The clients are able to intelligently associate with an AP to achieve good load balancing and hence high throughput; and 4) The AP network can be monitored and managed through our cloud-based management system. design and development. With better Wi-Fi experience and highly accurate device localization, Smart Wi-Fi will enable many lucrative business opportunities such as O2O (online to offline), mobile ads, mall innovation, crowd analysis and management, etc.
